The Sign of the Peacock

The Sign of the Peacock

Once upon a time we worked under a sign

Featuring the gentleman of an avian species.

Its extravagant tail appealed to the male

Of a certain class of human whose
                                       breeches bore no creases.

Our business survived it but now we’ve revived it

(Though with rather less attention paid to what
                                                a chap is wearing):

A Thresher sort of fellow has a tone that,
                                                 while more mellow,

Makes its point with hidden labels and a
                                             confidence of bearing.

The Sign of the Peacock has hovered over our enterprise since the earliest days, since
Mr Thresher moved his shop next to the Peacock Inn on The Strand. It has outlived our founders
but not their guiding principle: to outfit discerning gentlemen in clothes that really work for them,
made in superior materials for the keenest possible price.

Can a fowl so flamboyant stand for honest good value and subtle distinction?
Certainly. It is true to itself, and it’s ours.
